How to manage emails and mailboxes in Mail app on your iPhone/iPad

The Mail app on iPhone/iPad allows you to create mailboxes, mark emails, or create VIP lists for your special contacts. In this article, we will show the easy ways to do all this and more.

  1. Mark an email as read or unread on iPhone/ iPad
  • Open the Mail app from the Home screen of your iPhone/ iPad.
  • Tap on Edit in the top right corner.

  • Tap any email messages you want to mark as read.

 

  • Tap on Mark in the lower left corner.
  • Tap Mark as Read. If the messages were already read, you can tap Mark as Unread

  1. Flag an email on iPhone/iPad
  • Launch the Mail app from your Home screen
  • Tap on Edit in the top right corner of your screen.

  • Tap the messages you want to flag.
  • Tap on Mark in the lower left corner
  • Select Flag. If the messages were already flagged, just tap Unflag

Once you have messages flagged, a special Flagged mailbox will display in your Mailboxes list. You just tap on it to see the list.

  1. Add new mailboxes on iPhone/ iPad
  • Open the Mail app from the Home screen
  • Select Mailboxes in the upper left corner

  • Tap on Edit in the upper right corner of your screen.
  • Tap on New Mailbox in the lower right corner
  • Type a name for your mailbox in the Name section.

  • Tap the Mailbox Location to attach your new folder to an account.
  • Select the main mailbox in which you want to locate your new mailbox.
  • Tap on Save.
  • Finally, tap on Done

  1. Move messages to different mailboxes on iPhone/ iPad
  • Launch the Mail app from the Home screen
  • Look at Mailboxes in the top left corner of the screen, tap on it

  • Tap the mailbox that contains the messages you want to move.
  • Then tap on Edit.
  • Select messages you would like to move.
  • Tap on Move
  • Tap the mailbox you want to move the messages

  1. Move emails to suggested emails in the Mail app on iOS 10

If you device is running iOS 10, you can get suggestions in the Mail app for moving an email to a different mailbox based on previous activities. For example, if you usually move emails from your friends to the “Best friends” folder, you will see a pop up suggesting the ‘Best friend’ folder when you move them

However, first, you need to make sure your Mail settings are correct before using mailbox suggestions. To do that:

  • Launch the Settings app on your iPhone/iPad
  • Scroll down and tap on Mail.
  • Select Swipe Options.

  • Tap on Swipe Left or Swipe Right.
  • Select Move Message

 

Now, your Mail app is already set up the mailbox suggestion feature in iOS 10.

  • Open the Mail app on your iPhone/ iPad.
  • Find the email you want to move then swipe left or right
  • Tap on
  • Tap the suggested mailbox or tap Other to choose a different mailbox.
  1. Add more contacts to the VIP list on iPhone/ iPad
  • From the Home screen, Open your Mail app
  • Tap Mailboxes in the top left corner
  • Tap the ⓘ icon on the right end of the VIP inbox row.

  • Tap on Add VIP.
  • Tap on the name of contacts you want to add to VIP.
  • After you tap on their name, they will be automatically added to your VIP inbox.

  1. Set optional notifications for the VIP inbox on iPhone/ iPad
  • Open the Mail app on your iPhone/ iPad.
  • Tap on Mailboxes
  • Tap the ⓘ icon on the right end of the VIP inbox row
  • Select VIP Alerts.

  • Toggle notification settings on or off depending your decision.
