Steps to reset and troubleshoot your Apple TV

It’s inevitable that your Apple TV at times acts glitchy. At this point, you may be left wondering how to fix them. But did you know that if the Apple TV stops working, restarting it is always a good first step? So we will show you how to restart the device and even hard-restart it if it’s frozen. In case your TV is not working, we will offer you steps to troubleshoot it with techniques. We’ll also present to you how to factory reset and restore your TV in case you brick it with a bad jailbreak or failed system update, or simply you plan on selling it.

How to Restart Apple TV

Restarting the Apple TV can fix any minimal issues it’s facing. Note that this is not the same as resetting your TV. There are 2 different ways to do this. The first requires you to use the remote to go to Settings. In case your TV is frozen, you have to hard restart it. (We’ll go over in the next section).

To Restart Apple TV (4th Generation)

Step 1: Navigate to Settings.

Step 2: Choose System.

Step 3: Click Restart.

To Restart Apple TV (3rd Generation or earlier)

Step 1: Navigate to Settings.

Step 2: Choose General.

Step 3: Click Restart.

How to Hard Restart Apple TV(4th Gen touchpad remote)

To Hard Restart

Step 1: Press the Home and Menu buttons at the same time.

Step 2: Release when the TV starts flashing the LED.

To Hard Restart Apple TV (3rd Gen or earlier aluminum remote)

Step 1: Press the Down and Menu buttons at the same time.

Step 2: Release when TV starts flashing the LED.

How to Force Quit an App on Apple TV

You cannot force quit an app on the older models of the device, it’s best to restart it. There are two basic methods to quit an app on TV.

You can force quit an app by pressing and holding your TV remote’s Menu button within an app that you want to quit.

If you are using an older generation Apple TV, you are better off giving that first option a shot. On the flip side, you will need the Siri remote of the 4th generation one to force quit an app.

Step 1: Tap the Home button to get back to the main screen.

Step 2: Double-tap the Home button to launch the app switcher.

Step 3: Swipe to the left or right using the Touchpad, and choose the app you wish to quit.

Step 4: You can now force quit the app by swiping up.

Step 5: Lastly, get back to the Home screen by pressing the Home button.

How to Factory Reset Apple TV (4th Gen)

To Factory Reset 

Step 1: Launch the Settings app.

Step 2: Choose System.

Step 3: Click Reset.

Step 4: Choose Erase All Settings to remove your apps, accounts, and settings. Note that this will NOT factory reset your TV, and internet connection is not required for this operation.

To factory reset your TV, choose Restore. And internet connection is required to do this.

Once complete, you simply navigate to the App Store, choose Purchases, and redownload the apps you want in order to restore any app purchases.

To Factory Reset Apple TV (3rd Gen or earlier)

Step 1: Launch the Settings app.

Step 2: Choose General.

Step 3: Click Reset.

Step 4: Choose Erase All Settings to remove your apps, accounts, and settings. Note that this will NOT factory reset the TV, and internet connection is not required for this operation.

Step 5: To factory reset your TV, choose Restore. And internet connection is required to do this.

Step 6: Once it’s done, your device will power back up.

How to Reset an Unresponsive Apple TV

Step 1: Unplug the HDMI and power cord from your TV.

Step 2: Launch iTunes on your PC.

Step 3: On the 4th gen one, use a USB-to-USB-C cord to connect the TV to your PC.

                On the 3rd gen or earlier one, use a USB-to-microUSB cord to connect the TV to your PC.

Step 4: On the 3rd or 4th gen one, plug your TV power cord back in.

                On the 2nd gen one, leave your TV unplugged.

Step 5: In iTunes on your computer, select the Apple TV icon to see the summary of your TV.

Step 6: Once you are here, select Restore Apple TV. The process will take some time and be sure to keep your internet connection stable.
