As the holiday season comes to an end, Apple has released a new iPhone 7 Plus ad called Take Mine, which highlights the Portrait Mode feature on the flagship.
In the ad, a girl arrives at a coastal Mediterranean town to visit her grandmother. While in a café, she uses the iPhone 7 Plus to take a picture of her grandmother with the portrait mode, which then surprises her grandma due to the photo’s quality. This attracts the attention of others in the café. The girl soon becomes a photographer, taking pictures of many people, including fishermen, a musician, children, a barber and a local shepherd, also with the portrait mode. At the end of the ad, there is a tagline “Portrait mode on iPhone 7 Plus practically magic“. This is a fun lighthearted ad that plays an important role in showing off the Portrait Mode ability on the iPhone 7 Plus.
The Portrait Mode works by using the optical zoom lens on the iPhone 7 Plus to bring the subject closer, and then using some software to create a depth-of-field effect capable of separating the subject from the background. The feature should work well on your iPhone 7 Plus, but it’s worth noting that you will notice some unusual effects if you have complex subjects or wild hair.
Apple first released the portrait mode in September as a beta feature with iOS 10.1 on October 24. The feature still has room for improvement, as it needs some complicated software calculations.
It’s good to know that the Portrait Mode only works on the iPhone 7 Plus, as it makes use of the two cameras in the phone to identify 9 levels of depth. So, if you are using an iPhone 7 Plus, it’s pretty easy to take a professional-looking portrait like you take a photo.
