How To Change Screenshot Format On Mac OS

Taking screenshots is the great method to capture an image of the content on your screen. If you use an OS X, by default, the screenshot captured on Mac will be saved in the form of PNG. The biggest benefit of the PNG format is the quality of images; but the size of image file will be larger than other types of formats. This often takes a lot of time when uploading the files online. So, to make things faster, your best solution is changing the PNG format of the screenshots on your Mac. Here is how to change the PNG screenshots on your Mac into other formats.

Change Mac Screenshot Format to JPG

To do this, you will first need to launch the terminal on your Mac. Simply click on the Launchpad and search for ‘Terminal’.

One opened, enter the following command to change the file format:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg;killall SystemUIServer

Now try to take a screenshot on your Mac and save your file. You will see that the file format has been changed from png to jpg.

Change Screenshot Format to GIF

The GIF images usually comes with low resolution and they are not capable of getting the high quality of the captured screenshot. But this is a good format for those who don’t have much time for uploading images. To save the file in the GIF format, enter the following commands:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type gif;killall SystemUIServer

Change Screenshot Format to TIFF

TFT stands for Tagged Image File Format. This format is usually used for the high-quality images. If you want to turn the screenshot format into this type of format, then simply type this command:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type tiff;killall SystemUIServer

Change Screenshot Format to PDF

This is one of the most popular format mostly used for document purpose. If you would like to save the screenshot in the form PDF file, then enter the command given below:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type PDF;killall SystemUIServer

After trying all these formats, and you want to revert back to the default format,  you simply follow  the command given below:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type png;killall SystemUIServer
