How To Fix Audio Problems On iPhone XR

If your iPhone suddenly has no sound, it could be a hardware problem like a damaged speaker or audio components. However, there are still cases that the problems are related to software. That being said, audio problems can happen with both old and new phones. Before taking your iPhone to an Apple Center Repair, you should try some workarounds below to fix the audio problems.

Tacked in this post are possible solutions that are used to resolve software-related sound problems on your new iPhone XR.

Solution 1: Toggle ringer switch and then restart iPhone

To play ringtones and sounds through your iPhone speakers, your phone needs to be in the ring mode. If your iPhone is set to silent mode, ringtones or alerts could not be heard, but other sound can play through the inbuilt speakers. Your phone only vibrates. However, there are still many factors that cause your iPhone’s audio system to fail. The easiest potential solution to get rid of minor audio glitches is toggling the physical audio switch on your iPhone XR. You should then try the first solution and check if it helps you.

  1. To put your iPhone XR in ring mode, you should flip the switch upwards. This will hide the orange bar on the switch.
  2. To put in the silent mode, simply flip the switch downwards. The orange bar will get visible.

Once you flip the ringer switch from silent to ring, you should then restart your iPhone XR to remove cache and corrupted files that might have caused the audio system to fail to work. Here’s how to perform a soft reset on your iPhone XR:

  1. First, press firmly the Power button of your iPhone for a few seconds.
  2. When the Slide to Power Off command appears on the screen, release the button
  3. Drag the slider to the right to power off your iPhone
  4. After 1 minute, simply press and hold the Power button again until you see the Apple logo.

Solution 2: Disable Do Not Disturb (DND) feature

If it’s so, your phone will be prevented from making sounds for notifications, calls, etc. In this case, you need to disable Do Not Disturb feature on your iPhone XR. Here’s how to do so:

  1. Open Settings app from the Home screen.
  2. ChooseDo Not Disturb
  3. Toggle the Do Not Disturb switch OFF 

This will also re-enable notification sound for calls, messages, and other alerts.

Solution 3: Turn off Bluetooth on your iPhone

If your iPhone is currently connected to a Bluetooth accessory, you could not hear it sound since all sounds are routed to a paired Bluetooth device. To ensure it isn’t the cause of the problem, you should disable Bluetooth or delete all Bluetooth connections from your iPhone XR. Here’s how to do it:

  1. On your iPhone, head toSettings-> Bluetooth 
  2. Toggle the Bluetooth switch on. To remove corrupted Bluetooth connections, then turn Bluetooth off.
  3. You can also forget all saved Bluetooth connections by tapping on the “i” icon next to each Bluetooth device and choose Forget this Device

Once you disable Bluetooth or delete all Bluetooth devices from your iPhone XR, open any sound apps to check if your iPhone sound is already working.

Solution 4: Check and manage notification settings & reset all settings on your iPhone XR

If the problem only happens with notifications alerts of the certain apps, you need to reconfigure the app’s notification settings. iOS 12 version has a new feature that allows users to receive notifications quietly. You might have accidentally enabled this feature on your iPhone previously and forgot to disable. Notification alerts still appear in the notification center, but they are quietly delivered to. To configure this feature, you can refer to these steps:

  1. Open Settings app on your iPhone
  2. Tap on Notifications section
  3. Choose the app that you don’t receive notifications.
  4. Tap on the Lock Screen Banners and Sounds to re-enable them.

Doing so will send all notification alerts for the selected app.

Solution 5: Update your iPhone to the latest version

The latest iOS update includes an update file to fix glitches of the current iOS version. So, if the problem is related to system errors and bugs, you should then update your iPhone XR to the latest version. The fix patches are typically programmed to clear bug-inflicted errors to optimize performance for your iPhone XR. So, keeping your phone’s software up-to-date is necessary. You can check for a new update through OTA when your iPhone is connected to the Internet. Here’s how to so:

  1. Open Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Tap on GeneralSoftware Update.

If there is an update available, you will see an update notification on the screen.

Should you want to install the new update, it’s recommended to back up all your important files first and then follow the onscreen instructions to install the latest update on your phone. After the process is completed, reboot your iPhone to apply the system changes to prevent apps from acting up after the upgrade.

Factory reset your iPhone XR

A factory reset might be the last option if your iPhone XR still has no sound after all prior methods to clear out minor errors that are affecting the audio system.
