Marco Arment’s Overcast, the best podcast app for iOS, has just updated to version 3.0. The highlights include a new design with an in-house advertisement system. Previously, Overcast had to rely on in-app purchases and subscriptions, and Google-based advertising. And now, with the release of version 3.0, Overcast does have its own ads.
Overcast includes ads for non-Premium subscribers. You are not allowed to use personal data to target these ads except the podcasting directories that you are subscribe to. Different ads are shown in two different scenarios within the app. To specify, the Now Playing screen will show ads for various websites, podcasts, apps or Overcast Premium, and the Add Podcast screen will only show ads for podcasts.
Along with in-house ads, Marco Arment adds other major things to the update. The Now Playing screen and all other modal screens in the app now use a new card metaphor, which slides up from the bottom rather than pushing in from the right. Plus, you have the ability to swipe horizontally to bring up the show notes pane or the playback effects pane right from the Now Playing screen. Not stopping there, the new update allows you to access a small drawer of action buttons by tapping an episode in your queue. The options include Share, Star/Favorite, Play, Queue, and Delete. Besides, episodes on the list now offer the menu buttons for ordering.
Another interesting piece to note from the update is that an all new, much faster Watch app finally runs on watchOS 3, which enables you to view upcoming episodes from the wrist.
Overcast 3 is now available in the iOS App Store for free. Overcast also offers a premium ad-free version for only $9.99 a year.
