A lot of iPhone users have complained about iMessage waiting for activation error. This seems to be an issue with updating to iOS. The error happens during iMessage activation and stops iMessage from working. Don’t stress out yet. We will show you how to fix it, plus how to fix a similar error: Facetime waiting for activation. Just take a look at the four following methods.
Before jumping in, make sure that:
- You have updated to the latest version of iOS.
- You are connected to Wi-Fi.
- Date & Time are correct. To do this, just head to Settings > General.
Method 1: Airplane Mode
Step 1: First, launch the Settings app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Tap Messages, and then toggle off iMessage.
Step 3: You now need to go back and tap Facetime. After that, toggle off Facetime.
Step 4: Go back and scroll to the top of Settings.
Step 5: Once you are in, toggle on Airplane mode. This will turn Wi-Fi off.
Step 6: Tap Wi-Fi and then toggle Wi-Fi on.
Step 7: Go back and tap Messages again. Toggle on iMessage.
Step 8: Go back and tap Facetime. Toggle on Facetime.
Step 9: Go back and scroll to the top of Settings. Toggle Airplane mode off.
Step 10: If there is a popup saying Your carrier may charge for SMS, tap OK. If not, toggle iMessage and Facetime off and on again.
Step 11: Lastly, wait for iMessage to activate.
Method 2: Apple ID Sign Out & In
Step 1: First off, fire up the Settings app.
Step 2: Once you are in, tap Send & Receive.
Step 3: Tap your Apple ID and then tap Sign Out in the pop-up menu.
Step 4: Toggle off iMessage or Facetime if not working.
Step 5: Toggle Wi-Fi off and back on.
Step 6: You now need to wait a few minutes and then toggle iMessage back on.
Step 7: Tap Send & Receive, and tap Use your Apple ID for iMessage.
Step 8: You are prompted to type in your Apple ID information.
Step 9: Tap Sign In.
Method 3: Facetime & iMessage Reset
Step 1: Fire up the Settings app, and tap Messages.
Step 2: Toggle off iMessage.
Step 3: Go back, tap Facetime and toggle off Facetime.
Step 4: You are now asked to restart your iPhone.
Step 5: Turn your phone back on, and navigate to the Settings app.
Step 6: Tap Messages, and toggle iMessage on.
Step 7: Go back, tap Facetime, and toggle Facetime on.
Method 4: Reset Network Settings
Step 1: First, launch the Settings app, and tap General.
Step 2: Once you are in, scroll down to the bottom and tap Reset.
Step 3: Tap Reset Network Settings.
Step 4: In the end, type in your passcode.
This will not erase your data on your iPhone except Wi-Fi passcodes.
That’s all there is to it. If the above-mentioned methods didn’t work for you, you should give your iPhone 24 hours to activate iMessages or contact your cellular carrier service if you still cannot get iMessages working due to an activation error.
