Find Out If FaceTime Uses Much Data

Many iPhone users wonder if FaceTime eats up the data while their cellular plan minutes are being used. And with a new feature in iOS 11 version, it will allow you to make group FaceTime calls to check if your data plan is being used up with the app.

The bad news for iPhone users is that FaceTime uses data. But there is a way to turn off the usage by doing some simple tricks.

Does FaceTime Use Data or Wi-Fi?

Although, FaceTime is free to use for users to make video/audio calls between iPhones, it will use data when Wi-Fi is not available.

On the other hand, in case you use cellular data for FaceTime, it also doesn’t use excessive amount of data.

How Much Data Does FaceTime Use?

As mentioned, FaceTime does use data but it’s not an extreme data. But if you are planning to make a long-duration call, it’s better that you should connect your iPhone to a Wi-Fi network then make a call.

How to Check FaceTime Cellular Data Usage?

If you use your data plan for FaceTime calls, there is a way to check how much data is used on every single call. To do this, you just launch the phone app or the FaceTime app. In the phone app, tap Recent section while in the FaceTime, Video History will automatically show the calls. Just tap on the “i” next to a contact you called via FaceTime.

Doing this allows you to see the duration of your call with a specific contact and calculate whether that FaceTime call used much data or not.

How to Check Overall FaceTime Data Usage?

It’s noted that if you want to find out overall FaceTime data usage, you should have FaceTime app downloaded on your device. To check the amount of the data is used, go to Settings > Cellular. Scroll down and tap on FaceTime. Below it, you’ll see the app data usage.

There is also a way to know the last time you reset your data usage so that you can track it accurately. To do this

  1. Head to Settings > Cellular.
  2. Scroll down until you find Reset Statistics.
  3. Below the Reset Statistics option, you will see the date and time of the last reset.
  4. Tap on Reset Statistics to reset all of your data usage.
How to Ensure FaceTime Doesn’t Use No Data

If you see that FaceTime uses too much your data then you should disable FaceTime to run in cellular data and only allow it to run when your phone connects to a Wi-Fi connection. To do this

  • Launch Settings app
  • Tap on Cellular.
  • Scroll down to find FaceTime.
  • Turn it off.
