How to download apps over 150MB through cellular data

In the past few years, Apple has limited the size of app downloads using the cellular networks. If the app size is larger than 100MB, you would have to connect your iPhone or iPad to a Wi-Fi network for downloading. In the iOS 11 version, Apple bumped up a notch. The download limit is now increased to 150MB. But there are many of you who don’t regularly use the Wi-Fi network. So to help you bypass this restriction, we are going to show you to a nifty workaround that will allow you to download the apps that are larger 150MB with your cellular data.

How to bypass 150MB download restriction using cellular

Before proceeding, you should prepare your app for the download. To do so, you need to launch the App Store, search for the app that you want to download. From here, tap the Install/Get button and confirm your security with Face ID/ Touch ID or your password.

You will then see a notification on the screen stating that “this item is over 150MB” and “it may not download until you connect to Wi-Fi.” You should not worry about that, as you can easily bypass this issue. Just tap on OK and then return to your Home screen.

When you download an app that is larger than 150MB through the cellular data, your home screen just appears the app icon until your device connects to Wi-Fi. When the icon appears, just follow these below steps.

  • Launch the Settings app on your iPhone/ iPad
  • Tap on General > Date & Time
  • Turn ‘Set Automatically’ to Off
  • Tap on the Date option
  • Use the wheel and move the date forward 3-4 days
  • On done return to the Home screen. That’s it!

Now you just need to wait a few seconds before the download is finally started. However, when you back to home screen, the progress bar will appear inside of the app icon.

The app can now download as normal. Keep in mind that the larger data files will need much time to download on your cellular network. So, the games like PUBG or Infinity Blade will take quite a while to get downloaded. However, other social apps such as Facebook or Instagram can download rather quickly.

To explain why you can download the larger 150MB app from the App Store on your cellular data, it’s simply a bug in iOS 11 version. But we are not sure how long it will last since Apple will likely be fixing this in the next iOS update. Once you have downloaded the app, you should ensure that your time and date works properly. Follow these steps to set your date & time back to normal:

  • Launch Settings app
  • Head to General > Date & Time
  • Toggle ‘Set Automatically’ on

Once done, you will have successfully bypassed the download limit. But we don’t encourage you to use this workaround as your cellular data limits will be eaten up very fast. Honestly, there is no need to download the large app size through your cellular network. Simply wait until you connect to a Wi-Fi network and you can easily download these games and apps
