How to use Dock on your Mac

On your Mac, you will see a small panel along the edge of the screen, which is usually called the Dock. It allows you to quickly access your apps, files, and folders, or active apps. When an item is saved to the Dock, just click on it and you can access it at any time.

By default, all Apple stock apps have their shortcuts in the Dock, but you can easily remove those shortcuts or add your own. Customizing the Dock to fit your preferences is pretty simple. Here’s how you can do this.

How to add apps to the Dock on Mac

  • Open a Finder window from your Dock.
  • Click on Applications from the sidebar.
  • Choose an app and then drag it to the Dock.
  • Release the app while hovering over the Dock.

To add a running app to your Dock, simply do the following steps:

  • Right-click or Control-click on an app in the Dock.
  • Under the drop-down menu, select Options.
  • Click on Keep in Dock.

You can also drag the icon to a different position in your Dock, which will save it as your favorite shortcut.

How to add files and folders to the Dock

MacOS also lets you save Files and folders to your Dock, but they can only be stored on the right of the Dock. The Dock comes with a demarcating line separating apps from files and folders, so you cannot mix them up.

  • Open a Finder window from your Dock.
  • Choose a file or folder from the location on your Mac and then drag it to the right side of the Dock.
  • Release the file or folder when it hovers over the right side.

How to remove apps, files, and folders from the Dock

If you don’t want to save a particular app, file or folder in your Dock anymore, you can easily delete it just with a gesture. You should note that this doesn’t remove the item from your Mac, it just deletes the shortcut from your Dock, and you can re-add the app or folder whenever you want.

  • Choose app, file, or folder and then drag it out of the Dock.

When it hovers over your desktop, there will be a Remove appearing above the app, file, or folder.

  • Release the app, file, or folder.
  • Repeat the steps to remove items you no longer like to keep in the Dock.

How to organize the Dock on your Mac

The system lets you rearrange the placement of apps, files, and folders in your Dock if you want them to be in alphabetical order, or color-coordinated.

  • Choose an app, file, or folder in the Dock.
  • Drag it to a new position
  • Go of the app, file, or folder while it hovers over the new position.

How to change the Dock’s size

You can easily adjust the Dock’s size so that icons display larger or smaller as your liking. To do so:

  • Click on Apple icon in the upper left corner.
  • Choose System Preferences from the drop-down menu.
  • Click on Dock.
  • Drag the Size slider to the left or right if you want to decrease or increase the size of the Dock.
  • Tick on the box for Magnification to make the items in the Dock larger.
  • Drag the Magnification slider to the left or right to increase or decrease the size of the app.

How to automatically hide or show the Dock

If you don’t want the Dock taking up space on your small screen, you can then keep it hidden until you access it. You can call it back up by hovering your cursor over the place it resides. To do so:

  • Click on Apple icon in the upper left corner.
  • Choose System Preferences and click on.
  • Tick the box for Automatically hide and show the Dock.
