How to Back Up/Restore WhatsApp Chat Messages and Photos on iPhone

What would you do if you haven’t backed up your WhatsApp chat history on your device, and suddenly your little children unknowingly removed the app with all of its associated data?

In that case, you should not be panic. WhatsApp has a feature that allows you to back up the data manually and automatically. Depending upon your needs, you can choose to set the app to back up the data daily, weekly or monthly. If you are facing an unexpected situation (like the one mentioned above), there is an option for you to restore your WhatsApp chat history whenever you want. Without taking a lot of time, let’s show you how it works!

How to Backup/Restore WhatsApp Chat Messages and Photos on iPhone

Before getting started, you should make sure that the iCloud Drive is enabled for WhatsApp Backup. To do so, go to Settings app → Apple ID banner → iCloud and toggle the switch next to iCloud Drive to on. Also, make sure that the switch next to WhatsApp is already turned on.

Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your iPhone.

Step 2: Next, tap on Settings icon at the bottom right corner of the screen

Note: If you are using an Android device, just tap in the menu button at the top right and choose Settings.

Step 3: Now, tap on Chats and then select Chat Backup.

Step 4: Now, you will have an option to include all the videos in your backup. If you’d like to bring all of your sent/received videos, simply toggle on the switch next to Include Videos and then, tap on Back Up Now.

Wait for the app to back up your chat history. The time it takes to get done depends on the size of the file as well as the Internet speed.

Auto Back Up WhatsApp Chat History

If you don’t like backing up the chat history manually, you can consider the auto-backup option. You can make it done daily, weekly or monthly. To do so, simply follow the same steps above and then select Auto-Backup option. Next, select the preferred frequency.

Tip: If you don’t want to use the cellular for backing up, simply head to Settings→ Cellular → iCloud Drive and toggle off the switch next to it. From now, WhatsApp will use only Wi-Fi to back up your data.

How to Restore WhatsApp Chat Messages and Photos from Backup

You can use the above steps stored in your iCloud account to restore the backup. To do so, follow the steps mentioned below.

Step 1:  Double-check that you sign in the same Apple ID which was previously used for the backup.

Step 2: If it’s not already installed, just install WhatsApp and then open it.

Step 3: Ensure to use the same phone number to sign in to WhatsApp.

Step 4: Once signed in, you will be asked to restore the backup from iCloud. Simply tap on “Restore Chat History” and wait for the process to be successful. All your photos and other media will also be restored in the background.
