Face ID Has Been Disabled on iPhone XS/XS Max/XR? Here Are Solutions

The issue was first found by a Reddit user and the interesting thing is that the problem is associated with the TrueDepth camera, while, according to Apple, the problem is with the tele and Rear wide lenses, not the TrueDepth camera.

You can try these steps below to fix the Face ID issues on your iPhone before taking it to an official Apple repair center.

  1. Soft Reset iPhone XS/XS Max/XR

Sometimes, a simple reboot of your iPhone can solve many issues. Although the hardware failure of Face ID is not a small thing, you should still try a simple reboot and check if it can fix the issue.

  1. Perform a Hard Reset

You can do a hard reset of your iPhone by following the steps and check if it can help. If you’re lucky, this is a solution for you.

  • Press and quickly release the Volume Up button
  • Do the same with the Volume Down button
  • Finally, press and hold the Power button until you see the Apple logo

  1. Remove Face ID and Set it Up Again

Since Face ID utilizes the ‘TrueDepth’ camera on your iPhone, so if the problem is associated with the camera, you should not remove the Face ID. However, you can get rid of it as an experiment to solve the issue. Simply navigate to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and then Reset Face ID.

Once the process is completed, you can set it up again.


  1. Reset All Settings on iPhone XS/XS Max/XR

If the issue has not been solved yet, the last resort you can try is to “Reset All Settings” on your device. Head over to Settings, tap “General”, and select “Reset” > “Reset All Settings’.
